Welcome to the second issue of Nerdy Work!
Wait, is that a new name?
Yes it is! Allow me to explain. I changed the name of the newsletter for two main reasons:
I liked this pun better
Jobs oftentimes suck. They can be boring, unfulfilling, and stifling. Work should be rewarding. Work is both a verb and a noun — Shakespeare didn’t produce great jobs, he produced great works. We should be proud of what we make, even if it doesn’t net us money (though all work for others should be paid!).
OK, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let me introduce you to our new mascot!
This charming, ambitious, optimistic nerdy dinosaur (name TBD!) was designed for us by Nerdy Work subscriber Liz Lathem. We worked together every step of the way and it was a great experience! Check out her portfolio here!
Two more quick things:
Here is this week’s question for the comment section: What is one thing you’re really proud of making or accomplishing during this pandemic/quarantine?
It can be anything — some kind of work (a drawing, an article, a photo, a tweet, etc.) or something you did in your personal life (volunteered, focused on your mental health, called your friends more, etc). Remember to include your Twitter handle — mine is @JordanZakarin!
I want to offer as much as possible with this newsletter. The job listings email will always be free, but would you be willing to pay a few bucks a month for a premium subscription that includes weekly bonus issues packed with Q&As, industry insights, and interviews and advice from big names in the geeky arts, entertainment, publishing, and tech fields?
I can’t embed a poll here, so if you could answer this in the comments too, that’d be awesome!
OK, now to the week’s opportunities!

OK, that’s it for now! Remember to answer the questions I asked above in the comments! To refresh your memory, here it is again:
What is one thing you’re really proud of making or accomplishing during this pandemic/quarantine?
It can be anything — some kind of work (a drawing, an article, a photo, a tweet, etc.) or something you did in your personal life (volunteered, focused on your mental health, called your friends more, etc). Remember to include your Twitter handle — mine is @JordanZakarin!
Hi! I'm Allison (@therealadri on Twitter) and I'm loving this newsletter so far! I wish I could say that my greatest accomplishment in quarantine was learning to play the keyboard, but unfortunately I only learned a very stilted version of "Happy Birthday" before abandoning my lessons. But I am proud to have kept my recommendations and essays newsletter, Friendmendations (adri.substack.com) going throughout this, and I built a full archive of past recommendations for anyone looking to kill some time by going down various internet rabbit holes: https://www.recs.friendmendations.com/
Hello from Florida! I’m really proud of finishing my master’s thesis and degree program during the pandemic. Topic: Walt Disney and Space in the American Imagination. My degree is in American history and I focused on pop culture history, so the goal is to keep writing more of that!
As for paying a couple dollars a month for bonus newsletter content, I’m down. I’ve been trying to get out of the local TV news industry since before the pandemic, and this newsletter has been beyond helpful even in just 2 issues. Keep up the great work, Jordan!
